Dave Kitson says that he turned down the chance to play Championship football by accepting Oxford United's offer

Dave Kitson has revealed that he rejected offers from two Championship sides to link up with League Two outfit Oxford United.

Having been released by Sheffield United earlier this summer, the 33-year-old weighed up his options and last month opted to sign a two-year contract at the Kassam Stadium.

However, the centre-forward has revealed that he could have continued his career in the second tier of English football.

"I had lots of interest from clubs in a wide range of divisions," he told the Oxford Mail. "Two Championship teams made me offers, but I felt I wouldn't play much there and would be used more for helping bring on some youngsters.

"That's not me at this stage of my career, I want to be playing every week. Oxford really wanted me. They made a big play for me and I was flattered by their interest. Everything ticked the right boxes."

Kitson started his career at Cambridge United before turning out for Reading, Stoke City, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth and the Blades.
