Kick It Out chairman Lord Ouseley has backed calls for players who use offensive language on the football pitch to be punished following the John Terry racism trial.

Chelsea captain Terry was cleared earlier this week of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a match in October.

Despite the court ruling, the case revealed the type of language that is used by players during matches.

"The vast majority I think of people who play football, they may have prejudices, but they don't necessarily go on the football pitch to express them," Ouseley told BBC Sport. "We have got to look at those who commit these offences and deal with them very thoroughly."

Professional Footballers' Association chairman Clarke Carlisle recently urged clubs to act on players who use offensive terms on the pitch.
