Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye reportedly rejected the chance to return to the Premier League with Newcastle United.
The Senegal international, who spent three years at Everton before joining PSG in 2019, is no longer a regular at the Parc des Princes under Mauricio Pochettino.
French outlet L'Equipe reports that Newcastle stepped forward with a loan offer for the 31-year-old, but he decided to stay at PSG for the second half of the campaign.
Gueye is under contract with the Ligue 1 champions until 2023 and is expected to re-evaluate his future in the summer.
Asked about the speculation on Monday, Newcastle boss Steve Bruce joked: "Neymar was the one we were looking at, but that didn't quite happen."
United, who are 15th in the Premier League, have yet to make any signings ahead of Monday night's transfer cut-off point.
