Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew happy Newcastle United survived relegation

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew admits that he is happy to see former club Newcastle United retain their Premier League status.

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew has expressed his joy that former club Newcastle United managed to seal Premier League survival on the final day of the season.

The Magpies, who have been led by interim boss John Carver since Pardew's departure in January, grabbed a 2-0 triumph over West Ham United at St James' Park.

"I am pleased for Newcastle, for the staff and the players, that they have stayed up," the South Wales Evening Post quotes Pardew as saying.

"It was a great first half of the season for me there. It didn't start particularly well, but we got better. Then I came here to a club in a difficult position but not short of quality or character, and my goodness they have proved that."

Pardew led Palace to 10th in the table.
