John Carver: "It was a proper rollercoaster"

John Carver pays tribute to the Newcastle United fans after they retained their Premier League status with a 2-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday.

John Carver has described Newcastle United's final-day survival against West Ham United as a "proper rollercoaster" before paying tribute to the club's supporters.

The Magpies retained their top-flight status by beating West Ham United 2-0 at St James' Park, recording their first win in 11 games.

Carver was delighted with the support given by the fans, and he hailed the impact that he felt they had on the result that kept them in the Premier League.

He told Sky Sports News: "It was a proper rollercoaster. We were keeping an eye on what was happening at Hull, but I have to say, I thought we dealt with our emotions and the game very very well.

"It was tight in the first half, there wasn't a lot of chances and I thought we might have to wait for the final 10 minutes to get our chance and break them down. Sam Allardyce put his strongest team out. They were resolute and credit to Sam for doing that, he had to.

"You can see the difference [the fans make]. It's a cliche, but they were the 12th man. It was like we had eight subs on the bench, and that was the crowd. They backed us and got behind us and that was the big part of it."

Meanwhile, the club's owner Mike Ashley has rejected talk of selling up this summer.
