Newcastle United's new signing Vurnon Anita says that the club is capable of mounting a challenge for silverware this season.

Newcastle United's new signing Vurnon Anita is confident that the club can mount a challenge for silverware this season.

The 23-year-old won back-to-back Eredivisie titles with his former club Ajax, and is hoping to find similar success in England.

"I won almost everything in Holland so the step was not difficult to make," The Sun quotes him as saying. "Now I think we can also win trophies with Newcastle and it's time to do that.

"I talked to the manager and the coach and they know that I want to play in a defensive midfield place and that's why they brought me here.

"In the Premier League especially, every game is tough so it can help me also to grow in my football skills."

Anita completed his move to Newcastle earlier this week in a deal worth £6m.
