Sydney FC, Melbourne City draw in A-League

Sydney FC and Melbourne City come away from their A-League opener with a share of the spoils after playing out a 1-1 draw.

A goal from Filip Holosko in added-on time in the first half has earned Sydney FC a 1-1 draw at home to Melbourne City.

The first significant shot of the match came from Milos Dimitrijevic who fired a free kick towards goal, but former Stoke City goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen was able to gather.

Just after the quarter-hour mark, Melbourne took the lead through Wade Dekker, who slotted the ball past Vedran Janjetovic after Jacques Faty had been caught in possession.

City wasted little time in pushing for a second, with Hernan Espindola firing wide and Jason Trifiro striking the woodwork with a free kick, but deep into added-on time, Sydney were level.

A neat move involving Brandon O'Neill and Alex Brosque eventually resulted in the ball finding Holosko, who was well placed to tap home from close range.

Clear-cut opportunities dried up after the restart, but with 19 minutes remaining, Sydney's George Blackwood failed to make the most of a free header inside the penalty area.

Sorensen would prove to be the hero for Melbourne during the closing stages, making two interventions to deny Rhyan Grant and Blackwood, before he saved from Blackwood for a third time at point-blank range after the teenage forward had connected with a volley.
