Preview: Manchester City Women vs. Birmingham City Women - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Women's Super League clash between Manchester City Women and Birmingham City Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Manchester City Women will be looking for a 12th consecutive victory in all competitions when they play host to Birmingham City Women on Wednesday.

The visitors, meanwhile, will be relegated from the Women's Super League if they do not pick up three points at the Academy Stadium.

Man City are currently embroiled in a fierce battle with their local rivals Manchester United for the third and final Champions League qualification spot.

The Citizens currently sit in fourth place - one point adrift of the Red Devils - but after playing one game less, Gareth Taylor's side could move back into the top three with a win on Wednesday.

Momentum is certainly in their favour as Man City have won their last 11 matches in all competitions, with seven of those victories coming in the league.

For the fifth time in their last six matches, the Citizens scored score at least four goals in a match after they thrashed Aston Villa 7-2 on Saturday.

Four of those goals belonged to Khadija Shaw, while Caroline Weir, Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp all found the net, and a couple more displays like that would secure Man City Champions League football for next season.

Birmingham, meanwhile, are fighting for survival at the bottom of the WSL and although their relegation rivals Leicester City have played a game more, they trail the Foxes by five points.

The Blues know that if they are to beat the drop then they must beat Man City and their city neighbours Aston Villa, while Leicester have to drop points against Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the season.

Darren Carter's charges have demonstrated their fighting qualities in their last three games after taking four points from matches against Everton and Brighton & Hove Albion before losing narrowly to title-chasers Chelsea on Sunday.

Chelsea required a 71st-minute spot-kick from Pernille Harder to beat Blues 1-0, and although Birmingham competed with one of the best sides in England, the battling performance will be of little comfort to a team that are desperate for points.

If Birmingham are to beat Man City on Wednesday then they must do something that they have not achieved since the end of 2020, and that is to win consecutive away matches in the WSL.

Team News

The hosts are still without the services of Steph Houghton and Esme Morgan, who are both out due to injury issues.

Jess Park and Vicky Losada could return before the end of the season, but Wednesday's contest will come too soon for the pair.

After coming into the side at the weekend to score four goals, Shaw will continue to operate in a front three alongside Hemp and Chloe Kelly.

As for the visitors, Lucy Whipp returned from injury to feature as a second-half substitute against Chelsea and the 26-year-old is expected to be on the bench once again on Wednesday.

Cecilie Sandvej is also nearing a comeback, but it remains to be seen if the Danish international is fit enough to appear in midweek.

After seeing his team compete with the league leaders on Sunday, Carter may be tempted to name an unchanged lineup for the Man City clash.

Manchester City Women possible starting lineup:
Roebuck; Bronze, Kennedy, Greenwood, Stokes; Weir, Stanway, Walsh; Kelly, Hemp, Shaw

Birmingham City Women possible starting lineup:
Ramsey; Cowie, Scott, Lo. Quinn, Lawley, Robertson; Sarri, Finn, Murray; Lu. Quinn, Pennock

We say: Manchester City Women 3-0 Birmingham City Women

Birmingham know they must win to take the relegation battle to the final day, but we think that they may fall short in midweek when they face a Man City side that are currently in imperious form.
