Roy Keane disagrees with Wayne Rooney doubters

Roy Keane says that anyone who thinks that Wayne Rooney is beginning to dwindle is "sadly mistaken".

Roy Keane has said that he does not think that Wayne Rooney has "gone", despite the Manchester United forward drawing criticism throughout the World Cup.

Rooney was played out of position at left wing in England's opener, but he did lay on an assist for Daniel Sturridge in the second half.

He then went on to score England's only other goal of the tournament in a 2-1 defeat to Uruguay, which has led Keane to back the England international.

"If you think Wayne Rooney's gone, then you are sadly mistaken," Keane told the Mail on Sunday. "I thought he did okay. There was a lot rolled into his position. England scored two and he got one of them.

"I'm sure Wayne, like lots of the players, will feel he could have done better. Top players are always quick to look at themselves, they are quite self-critical."

Keane was recently appointed as Paul Lambert's assistant at Aston Villa, and will combine those duties with the same role for the Republic of Ireland.
