Robin van Persie: 'I wanted to go to Rangers'

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie admits that he came close to signing for Scottish club Rangers several years ago when Dick Advocaat was in charge.

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has admitted that he came close to signing for Scottish club Rangers several years ago.

The 31-year-old, who began his career at Feyenoord, claimed that he spoke to Dutch manager Dick Advocaat when he was in charge of the Old Firm outfit between 1998 and 2002, and nearly agreed to a move.

Van Persie is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "Years ago I was still playing for Feyenoord and I wanted to go.

"I spoke to Dick Advocaat, who was the manager of Glasgow Rangers and he was interested, I was interested, I was ready to go. But they first needed to sell one player before they could buy me, or something like that.

"I was still very young, maybe 19 or 20, but in the end I went to Arsenal."

Van Persie spent eight years with the Gunners before moving to Old Trafford in 2012.
