Ajax assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag is reportedly edging closer to joining Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, with an agreement close as talks are ongoing.

Ajax assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag has reportedly taken a step closer to joining Erik ten Hag at Manchester United next season.

The Dutch duo can secure the Eredivisie title on Wednesday evening, when Ajax host Heerenveen at the Johan Cruyff Arena, currently sitting four points clear at the top with two games to play.

Ten Hag will join up with his new Man United squad after the conclusion of the league in the Netherlands, but needs to gather his backroom staff to join him at Old Trafford.

Football journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that Van der Gaag is considered to be an important addition at the Red Devils, with an agreement edging closer as talks are ongoing.

Fred Rutten, who was Ten Hag's former superior, has turned down the chance to coach at Man United, instead opting to work with Ruud van Nistelrooy at PSV Eindhoven.

Man United have been linked with numerous players since the announcement of Ten Hag including Darwin Nunez, Goncalo Inacio and Nordi Mukiele.
