Manchester United are hopeful that a deal for Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels can be revived as the German side turn their attention to Liverpool's Portuguese centre-back Tiago Ilori as a replacement, reports suggest.
According to the Daily Mail, Dortmund have asked to take Ilori on loan if a deal for Hummels to move to Old Trafford can be thrashed out before the transfer window closes.
Twenty-year-old Ilori, bought for £7m from Sporting Lisbon last summer, was loaned to Granada last season where he is said to have impressed scouts across Europe.
Dortmund are thought to be long-term admirers of Ilori, having eyed him up while he was still at Lisbon, but they were reluctant to pay the fee eventually met by Liverpool.
United boss Louis van Gaal recently confirmed that he intends to bring in defenders in this window.
