Jose Mourinho: 'Chelsea can't match transfer record'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admits that the club would not be able to match the £59.7m fee that Manchester United paid for Angel di Maria this summer.

Jose Mourinho has admitted that Chelsea would not be able to match the British transfer record set by Manchester United last month.

The Old Trafford side paid £59.7m for Angel di Maria over the summer, breaking the record that Chelsea had set when they bought Fernando Torres in 2011.

The manager told Eurosport: "Chelsea not, for sure, because Chelsea is working in relation to the Financial Fair Play. We are making money to be able to spend money.

"In every transfer window Chelsea is losing players, is selling players. In the winter one we sold [Juan] Mata, in the summer one we sold David Luiz and [Romelu] Lukaku.

"So Chelsea in this moment is not a spender, Chelsea in this moment is making more money in transfers than the money we spend."

Chelsea currently sit at the top of the Premier League table.
