Newcastle United are interested in signing Ajax's defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez, according to a report.
With Jonjo Shelvey set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury, Eddie Howe is believed to be on the lookout for a new midfielder before the September 1 deadline.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle have made an enquiry for Alvarez, but their valuation of the 24-year differs significantly with that of Ajax's.
The report adds that the Magpies 'admire' Alvarez, who has won two Eredivisie titles and one KNVB Beker since joining the Dutch giants from Club America in 2019.
The 55-cap Mexico international, who has three years remaining on his contract, is regarded as a first-team regular at Ajax and has made 106 appearances in all competitions.
Newcastle are also keeping tabs on RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara, while they have allegedly agreed a deal to sign Real Sociedad forward Alexander Isak.

Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ander Herrera is reportedly close to re-joining La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao.
The 33-year-old spent three years with the Basque-based side between 2011 and 2014, before joining Manchester United for around £32m.
Herrera has since plied his trade in Paris for the last three seasons, although he struggled for regular game time in 2021-22 and appears to have fallen down the pecking order under new head coach Christophe Galtier.
According to Marca, Herrera is set to terminate his PSG contract – which still has two years left to run – and he has agreed to take a 40% wage cut to re-join boyhood club Bilbao on a free transfer this summer.
The report adds that the Spaniard will sign a two-year deal with the La Liga club until June 2024 with the option to extend it by a further year.
Herrera's transfer to Bilbao is thought to be imminent although he is unlikely to make an appearance in their next league game on Monday away against Cadiz.

Staying with PSG, striker Mauro Icardi is reportedly in talks with Galatasaray over a move to Turkey on a season-long loan deal.
The 29-year-old is expected to leave the Parc des Princes this summer and has recently been linked with a potential move to Manchester United.
However, The Sun claims that Galatasaray are now leading the race for his signature, with his agent and wife Wanda Nara in talks with the Turkish giants.
The report adds that Galatasaray are interested in recruiting the striker on an initial loan deal and are willing to cover just £2.5m of the Argentine's £10m-a-year salary, while PSG are prepared to pay the remaining £7.5m.
Since joining PSG in 2019, Icardi has recorded 38 goals and 10 assists in 92 games across all tournaments and has won seven trophies including two Ligue 1 titles.

Meanwhile, free agent Serge Aurier has reportedly undergone his medical ahead of completing a move to Nottingham Forest.
The 29-year-old has been without a club since his contract with La Liga side Villarreal expired at the end of June.
According to the Daily Mail, Aurier completed his medical on Wednesday and the full-back is set to sign a one-year contract at the City Ground with the option to extend it by a further year.
Aurier, who spent four years at Tottenham Hotspur between 2017 and 2021, is set to become Steve Cooper's 16th first-team signing of the summer window.
The Ivory Coast international, who can operate at either right-back or left-back, could be signed in time to make his Forest debut against Spurs on Sunday.
