On this day: Michael Duberry, Gianluca Vialli goals down Manchester United

Eighteen years ago today, goals from Michael Duberry and Gianluca Vialli earned Chelsea a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford as Manchester United suffer a third straight home loss.

Throughout Sir Alex Ferguson's time in charge of Manchester United, few opposition sides enjoyed their visits to Old Trafford.

However, one club that would often infuriate the Scot by leaving Manchester with at least a share of the spoils was Chelsea.

Ferguson took charge of 31 United home encounters against Chelsea, but while his players were used to dominating the head-to-head record of most fixtures, they failed to win 19 of those clashes.

One of Chelsea's eight victories over a Ferguson-managed United came back on this day in 1996. The hosts were looking to bounce back, having been defeated 5-0 and 6-3 by Newcastle United and Southampton respectively during their previous two outings, but the Blues piled on more misery.

Ruud Gullit's men broke the deadlock in the 31st minute through an unlikely source. A floated corner from Dennis Wise was sent into the United area and rising highest to meet it was Chelsea centre-back Michael Duberry, who powered a header past Peter Schmeichel.

The lead was then doubled with 61 minutes played when Italian frontman Gianluca Vialli beat the offside trap to go through one-on-one with Schmeichel. Vialli then showed all of his experience to get the better of the Dane.

United defender David May reduced the arrears with nine minutes left to play, but, despite a late onslaught, Chelsea held out to claim all three points.

Speaking in 2011 to Goal.com about his impact that day, Duberry said: "I still get tweets from people asking me if I remember that goal up at Old Trafford which shows that it was more significant than even I thought it was, and for me it was massive.

"So I guess that just shows how much it means to be on the winning side there as a fan, a player or as part of the staff because it is one of the greatest and most historic stages in world football.

"I still remember [the goal] clearly. It was my mum's birthday and I can recall to this day how I rose like a proverbial salmon to nod a corner past Schmeichel."
