Dwight Yorke: 'Ryan Giggs has to be given Manchester United job'

Dwight Yorke believes that the changing face of football means Manchester United simply have to take on Ryan Giggs as their next manager.

Dwight Yorke has become the latest former Manchester United player to offer his backing for Ryan Giggs to take on the managerial job at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal's time at the club is reportedly coming to an end, as an inconsistent campaign to date has left the Red Devils on the brink of another trophyless season.

Giggs has been a part of United's coaching setup since David Moyes was appointed in 2013, and was even given the role as caretaker manager upon the Scotsman's sacking two years ago.

Fresh on the back of Bryan Robson tipping the 42-year-old to replace Van Gaal in the summer, Yorke has now also explained why there should be just one candidate to take over.

"Giggs has been under the main man now for three years and you look at how football is changing," he told 888sport.com. "In Spain's top three all the managers are young ex players. You have Pep [Guardiola] who is coming over, a young manager at 45.

"There's [Mauricio] Pochettino at Spurs and [Zinedine] Zidane and [Luis] Enrique in Spain and [Antonio] Conte in Italy and Gary Neville is being given a chance. You'll find now in the next five years there will be more young ex players managing football teams because there is a new generation of managers coming through.

"The old ones are fizzling out. The likes of Sam Allardyce may hang on in there for another year or two but the new generation are coming."

United face a huge week ahead, as they look to overturn a two-goal deficit against Liverpool in the Europa League before travelling to Manchester City on Sunday in the Premier League.
