Ray Wilkins: 'Manchester United have disrespected Louis van Gaal'

Former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins slams the club for acting disrespectfully to manager Louis van Gaal amid reports that he is on the verge of being sacked.

Former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins has claimed that the club acted disrespectfully in their handling of the news that Louis van Gaal will be sacked in the coming days.

No official confirmation has come from the Red Devils yet, but numerous reports suggesting that Van Gaal will be replaced by Jose Mourinho emerged shortly after the Dutchman had steered United to their first major trophy in three years with victory in the FA Cup final yesterday.

The news, which Van Gaal appeared to confirm himself earlier today, threatened to overshadow United's success, and Wilkins believes that the club should have dealt with it in a similar manner to how local rivals Manchester City announced that Pep Guardiola would be replacing Manuel Pellegrini earlier this season.

"I saw Jose was at the [David Haye] fight last night and they were trying to interview him after it and he was very non-committal in his response to the media," he told talkSPORT.

"It's been a tad disrespectful as far as Van Gaal is concerned. The decision should have been made and United should have come out and said what the situation was.

"I thought the way City dealt with the Manuel Pellegrini situation was spot on. He wasn't going to be there and rumours were rife that Guardiola was going to take over and I thought they handled it in the best possible fashion."

The latest reports have suggested that Mourinho's move to Old Trafford will be finalised on Tuesday.
