Louis van Gaal 'surprised' by FIFA's Coach of the Year nomination

Louis van Gaal admits that his nomination for FIFA's Coach of the Year accolade is "unbelievable" due to his slow start to life as manager of Manchester United.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has expressed his shock at being nominated for FIFA's Coach of the Year award.

The former Netherlands manager, who took over at Old Trafford in the summer, was announced as one of the candidates for the accolade earlier this week alongside the likes of Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti.

Van Gaal is up for the award due to his exploits with the Dutch national side at this year's World Cup, where he guided Oranje to a third-place finish.

However, the 63-year-old admits that his below-par start to life at Old Trafford deems him unworthy of the title.

"When you see the results of Manchester United it is unbelievable that I'm on the coach of the year shortlist," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

United are currently seventh in the Premier League table.
