Louis van Gaal "delighted" by new Chris Smalling contract

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal claims that he is "delighted" following the news that Chris Smalling has signed a new deal with the club.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has admitted that he is "delighted" by Chris Smalling's decision to sign a new deal with the club.

The England international defender committed his future to the Red Devils on Tuesday by penning a contract extension until 2019.

Smalling, 25, has made nearly 150 appearances for United since arriving at Old Trafford from Fulham in 2010.

"Chris has improved and developed immensely during the short time that I have been at the club and has become an integral part of the first-team squad," Van Gaal told the club's official website.

"He always conducts himself in a very professional manner and it is also pleasing that he has scored some important goals this season too. I am delighted he has signed a new contract."

Smalling has won two Premier League titles during his time with Manchester United.
