Alan Shearer: 'Wayne Rooney red card proof Manchester United are a mess'

Alan Shearer believes that Manchester United are currently a "confused mess" and points to Wayne Rooney's red card against West Ham United as the perfect example.

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has claimed that Wayne Rooney's red card against West Ham United was a perfect example of the "confused mess" at Manchester United this season.

The United skipper was given his marching orders for a wild swipe on Stewart Downing in the Red Devils' 2-1 win on Saturday.

Despite the victory, Shearer believes that Louis van Gaal's side are still struggling, and Rooney's actions were a perfect illustration of the chaos that has engulfed the club.

He told The Sun: "Wayne Rooney's stupidity was symptomatic of just where Manchester United are right now - in a bit of a confused mess.

"The problem is, Rooney is trying to do everyone's job to get them out of it. His swing at Stewart Downing was an act of desperation.

"It was not as if Downing was clear through on goal. There were plenty of defenders for him to get past from inside his own half. Yet it was probably down to a lack of trust in them on Rooney's part that he made the challenge."

United host Everton on Sunday.
