Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that the England team haven't been the same since Glenn Hoddle was the manager.

Hoddle was removed as boss of the Three Lions after making controversial comments regarding disabled people in 1999.

Ferdinand told The Sun: "The England team hasn't been going in the right direction since Glenn Hoddle was manager.

"There is no question he was the best and I'd love to see him back again in some way. He has to be given an influence at the FA because he knows what coaching is all about."

Ferdinand retired from international football in May, stating that he wishes to prolong his club career.
