Phillip Cocu backs Memphis Depay to improve at Manchester United

Phillip Cocu says that he is "not surprised" with Memphis Depay's slow transition to life in the Premier League, but backs his former PSV Eindhoven player to improve.

PSV Eindhoven boss Phillip Cocu has admitted that he is "not surprised" by Memphis Depay's early Premier League struggles.

The winger signed for Manchester United from the Dutch outfit during the summer in a deal worth in the region of £25m.

Depay has impressed in the Red Devils' two Champions League outings since joining, but has yet to contribute a single goal domestically speaking.

However, Cocu - who managed the 21-year-old during his time at PSV - does believe that the youngster will become a star at Old Trafford in the long term.

"I think each player will need some time to get used to a certain league like the Premier League," he is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"I'm not surprised he'll have some ups and downs, he's a player who puts a lot of risks in his actions and if he's not successful, criticism will follow, on the other hand, he can be decisive also.

"Some games will end good but it will be difficult in the beginning. I'm sure when he's been playing a few months, I'm convinced he'll get better and better. He will bring goals. Not only will he score goals, he has good vision, a good eye for his fellow players."

Depay is expected to line up against his former side in Tuesday night's Champions League group-stage clash at the Philips Stadion.
