Jamie Carragher: 'Manchester United won't win title if top-six record is poor'

Jamie Carragher claims that Manchester United could miss out on winning the Premier League title because of Jose Mourinho's record against the top six.

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Manchester United will not end the season as Premier League champions if results against the so-called top six do not improve.

Jose Mourinho's side stretched their unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions with a goalless draw against arch rivals Liverpool on Saturday.

However, the United manager's defensive tactics were criticised, and it was not the first time that the Portuguese coach has taken that approach against the 'bigger' teams in the top flight.

United have lost three and drawn three of their last six matches against the top six and in that time have found the back of the net just once.

"I think the criticism will be saved to the end of the season if results in big away games don't improve and it costs them the title," Carragher said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football. "Jose Mourinho has always been lauded as the man for the big occasion, but his way of late is not working.

"With the top six now, there are 30 points up for grabs. If that doesn't improve, they won't win the league. Manchester City have got six points from matches against Chelsea and Liverpool. Somewhere along the line Mourinho has got to pick up points."

The Red Devils are second in the league table, two points adrift of neighbours Man City.
