Nicky Butt backs Paul Scholes return

Nicky Butt backs Paul Scholes's return to the Manchester United playing staff.

Paul Scholes's former Manchester United teammate Nicky Butt has backed the veteran midfielder to "do a job" for the Red Devils this season.

Scholes made a shock return to the United squad for their FA Cup third round clash with rivals Manchester City yesterday, after coming out of retirement earlier that day.

The 37-year-old came off the bench for a half-hour cameo on Sunday and Butt believes he will be as reliable as ever upon his return to regular action.

"Paul will go back and slot in, just stand back and not want to be the star of the show. He will just train every day as normal and try and help people out and when he is called upon he will do a job," Butt told BBC Sport.

Butt believes it was the ex-England international's love for the game which prompted his retirement turnaround.

"I know he has missed the game. He trains there everyday with the reserves and helps coach them," he said.

"He felt like going there every day, training and working hard every day, why then should he not get the reward and play at the weekend?

"So he had a chat with the manager and they came to the conclusion that he is back in the squad."

Butt won six Premier League titles alongside Scholes during his twelve-year spell at Old Trafford.
