QPR midfielder Joey Barton thinks that Wayne Rooney should be the captain of England over current skipper Scott Parker.

Queens Park Rangers captain Joey Barton believes that England need to rejuvenate the national set-up by appointing Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as skipper.

The Three Lions' temporary coach Stuart Pearce handed the captaincy to Scott Parker for last night's friendly against the Netherlands, which England lost 3-2 at Wembley.

"This is almost that same side that was humbled by Germany," Barton wrote on Twitter. "I say make Rooney captain, give youngsters a chance. Out with the old in with the new.

"Let's send a young side, the Euro's give them that experience. Even if we don't do well. At least have some long term strategy."

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Parker revealed after the game that he was "delighted" to captain his country and admitted that he would like to lead England to the European Championships this summer.
