Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that Wayne Rooney is capable of playing in midfield.
The 25-year-old will start in that position for United tonight against FC Galati at Old Trafford.
Explaining the decision, Ferguson told Sky Sports News: "Basically we're resting Darren Fletcher, Anderson is only coming back and Michael Carrick is still injured.
"That's part of the reason [Rooney is in midfield].
"Wayne can player there. I just want him to play as a midfielder. He's got the ability and the energy."
Rooney also played in that role against Everton on Saturday afternoon.
