Rio Ferdinand challenges Manchester City to improve Champions League form

Rio Ferdinand calls for Manchester City to translate their domestic form to the Champions League after a 2-1 defeat to Juventus.

Rio Ferdinand has challenged Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini to find the right formula in Europe after they slipped to a 2-1 reverse at home to Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Premier League leaders opened the scoring through Giorgio Chiellini's own goal, but strikes from Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata gave the Italian champions the victory, and Ferdinand has questioned why City cannot replicate their domestic form on the European stage.

He told BT Sport: "This game suited Juventus because they can sit back. In their own league, they are the team to beat and they have got to go out and beat team. Here [in the Champions League] they can sit back and counter teams.

"I think now Manchester City have got a lot of work to do. Sevilla look good and it's going to be very, very tough for City this campaign. They have spent big and here is where the players show their worth.

"They have got to really translate their form in the Premier League into the Champions League and Manuel Pellegrini seems at odds there, he doesn't seem to know how to do it. He needs to work out why his players perform so well [domestically] and not on the European stage."

City return to domestic action when they host West Ham United on Saturday.
