Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has claimed that the Reds should be looking to sign 'someone like Wilfried Zaha' in the latter stages of the transfer window.

The Merseyside giants have been quiet this summer in terms of signings, with 16-year-old Harvey Elliott and 17-year-old Sepp van den Berg the club's only two arrivals since the end of last season.

Murphy, though, has said that "someone like Zaha" would be ideal as Jurgen Klopp's side look to launch another strong challenge for the Premier League title during the 2019-20 campaign.

"Someone like Zaha, I'm not necessarily suggesting him, but a player like him could go in there and really compete," Murphy told talkSPORT.

"He's the type of player who wouldn't really make them weaker if he was playing instead of [Sadio] Mane or [Roberto] Firmino. But is a player of that quality going to want to sit on the bench and are Liverpool prepared to put more than £60m into a signing that might not be in the first XI? It's a difficult one."

Zaha, who scored 10 times and contributed 10 assists for Crystal Palace in the Premier League last term, has been linked with both Arsenal and Everton during this summer's transfer window.

However, the Eagles have reportedly told interested parties that the 26-year-old is not available for any price ahead of the new season.
