Liverpool have reportedly fallen short with their £62m bid for Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker as Roma are holding out for an extra £5m.
The Reds are said to have made their first official approach for the 25-year-old on Tuesday afternoon following weeks of speculation.
Sky Sport Italia suggests that, while discussions have begun, no fee has been agreed between last season's Champions League semi-final opponents.
Liverpool are now expected to meet Roma's demands in order to bring an end to the long-running saga, with Jurgen Klopp in desperate need of a new number one in time for the 2018-19 campaign.
Alisson, also a rumoured target for Real Madrid and Chelsea, made 49 appearances for Roma last season and also starred for Brazil at this summer's World Cup in Russia.
