Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic has insisted that money "was not the issue" behind his failed move to Anderlecht on transfer deadline day.
The Serbian flew to Belgium to complete his switch on Friday after Liverpool had agreed a £2.9m deal with Anderlecht, but the transfer broke down at the 11th hour as Markovic failed to agree personal terms.
The 24-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with the Belgian outfit, but Anderlecht boss Hein Vanhaezebrouck was critical of the player and insisted that it was "his own fault" that the deal did not go through, prompting Markovic to respond on Twitter.
Thank you for making such a great effort for trying to get me back in the club. However, money was not the issue !!!!! Good luck in the future 💜 @rscanderlecht

Markovic has subsequently been left out of Liverpool's 25-man squad for the 2018-19 Premier League season.
