Liverpool are reportedly determined to clinch Fulham forward Clint Dempsey, despite reports linking the USA international with a move elsewhere.
The 29-year-old is believed to have been a long-standing target for the Merseyside club, who looked likely to poach the attacker when he refused to play for the Cottagers at the start of the new campaign.
Reports have emerged suggesting that Sunderland are close to agreeing an £8m move with Fulham. However, it is understood that the Reds are willing to fight for his signature, according to the Liverpool Echo.
It is believed that the Merseyside outfit will allow midfielder Jay Spearing to leave on a season-long loan to Bolton Wanderers and are thought to be open to offers for Charlie Adam.
