Daniel Sturridge hopes for England chance

Daniel Sturridge hopes that his form for Liverpool will be enough for him to earn him another England call-up, after injury forced him to withdraw from Roy Hodgson's last squad.

In-form Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is desperate to earn another England call-up after pulling out of Roy Hodgson's last international squad with injury.

The 24-year-old, who has netted in five consecutive club games since the start of the season, was poised to lead the Three Lions attack in the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine last week.

However, a thigh problem, from which he recovered in time to score in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Swansea City on Monday, forced him to withdraw and allowed Southampton's Rickie Lambert a chance to stake his claim as England's first-choice striker.

Speaking after the Reds' trip to the Liberty Stadium, Sturridge admitted that his injury was unfortunate timing, but hopes that continued success in front of goal could hand him another opportunity.

"I trained for the first time on Friday with the team after the England trip," Sturridge told Sky Sports News.

"I was disappointed not to be there as it was a big opportunity for me, but hopefully I'll be selected to play in the next one if the manager thinks I'm good enough."

Only Aston Villa's Christian Benteke, with 19 goals, has scored more times in the Premier League in 2013 than Sturridge, who has found the net on 18 occasions this year.
