Brendan Rodgers: New Liverpool signings can "threaten the goal" next season

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers acknowledges that a lack of goals last season cost his side, but believes his new signings can readdress the attacking balance.

Brendan Rodgers has suggested that summer signing Roberto Firmino could be the man to lead the scoring charge for Liverpool next season.

The Reds scored just 52 goals in the Premier League last time out on their way to finishing a disappointing sixth.

That weak tally is in stark contrast to the 101 netted a year prior when the Merseyside outfit narrowly missed out on the league crown.

Rodgers admits that goalscoring was a major downfall for his side last term, but has backed his new recruits - including Hoffenheim purchase Firmino - to return the club to scoring ways.

"Of course, the season when we were runners-up we ended up with 101 goals," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. "Last year we didn't score enough goals.

"But this is a new team; the ideas and philosophies are the same but we're bringing in players that can really threaten the goal again - that's something that's exciting me.

"Young Firmino coming in has got experience of European football, is just starting to make his mark on the Brazilian squad, and is a player on the way up."

Liverpool, who continue their preparations for the new campaign by taking on Adelaide United on Monday morning, have also brought in Danny Ings and James Milner in attacking positions.
