Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp apologises to Brighton & Hove Albion counterpart Chris Hughton for a "misunderstanding" between the pair on Saturday.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has explained why Brighton & Hove Albion counterpart Chris Hughton was unhappy with him at the full-time whistle of the Premier League game between the clubs on Saturday.

The Merseyside giants had just completed a 5-1 victory at the Amex Stadium when Hughton appeared to be angry with Klopp on the touchline.

Klopp has apologised for his part in the incident, suggesting that Hughton had felt that a handshake had been snubbed in favour of celebrating with Mohamed Salah.

The 50-year-old told reporters: "It was a misunderstanding, nothing else. I have to apologise, not for doing something wrong on purpose.

"I wanted to shake Chris's hand and Mo Salah came across, I gave him a hug, and Chris wasn't too happy. It was not on purpose and after the game I wanted to see him and I hope everything is fine.

"I would never be disrespectful in a moment like this. I can only apologise."

Liverpool's win over the Seagulls led to the North-West club moving into fourth place in the league standings.
