Jamie Carragher: 'Liverpool didn't do enough to keep Steven Gerrard'

Jamie Carragher feels that Liverpool should have offered Steven Gerrard a coaching role at the club to try to convince him to extend his career at Anfield.

Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool could have done more to convince Steven Gerrard to prolong his career with the club.

The 34-year-old has announced his decision to leave the Reds at the end of the season, bringing an end to his 17-year tenure with the club.

However, his former teammate feels that the Merseysiders should have tried to tempt Gerrard with a coaching role to extend his deal at Anfield.

Carragher is quoted as saying by The Mirror: "I can understand from his personal point of view to have a clean break. But, from the club's point of view, I'm surprised.

"It's Stevie's decision, but could the club have done that little bit more? Maybe have spoken about a coaching role in the future to entice him to stay?

"No-one should have a job at a club for life because of what they have done as a player. But to lose that experience to pass on to younger players at the academy and players in the first team I just look at that from a club's point of view and a supporter's point of view and think I'd like to have seen him stay in some capacity."

Gerrard has been linked with a move to the MLS when his contract expires in the summer.
