Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger has insisted that he is pleased with the competition for places at the club.
The Reds boosted their defensive ranks significantly over the summer with the signings of Tiago Ilori, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho.
Agger, who has seen his appearances limited this season due to injury, believes that the depth in the squad is necessary for the team to challenge in the Premier League.
"The other players have done well and it is great that we have competition for places," he told Danish newspaper BT.
"If we want to be in the top of the league, then we have to have competition for all places. I have been here for eight years and I know how it is in a club like Liverpool."
The Merseysiders are currently in second place in the Premier League table following Saturday's 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.
