Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Joel Matip sustained damage to his ankle ligaments in Thursday's 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
The centre-back was hauled off at half time as Liverpool's defensive crisis worsened, but Klopp's men nevertheless managed to claim a vital three points in the capital thanks to goals from Sadio Mane, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino.
Klopp was already without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Fabinho for the midweek win, and the Reds boss has now conceded that Matip may be set for a spell on the sidelines again.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Klopp said: "He had a problem with his ankle. There was no chance to play on. It looks like something serious, to be honest, for Joel."
Van Dijk and Gomez are already long-term absentees while Fabinho was ruled out hours before kickoff, although the makeshift centre-back partnership of Jordan Henderson and Nathaniel Phillips performed well in the second half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The champions' 3-1 triumph ended a run of five top-flight games without a win and four without a goal, with Klopp's side now back in the top four and six points behind leaders Manchester City.
