Lille boss Rene Girard 'doesn't regret' shock cup upset

Rene Girard does not regret making wholesale changes to his Lille team after they were knocked out of the Coupe de la Ligue by second-tier side Auxerre.

Rene Girard has no regrets over changing his team around despite their surprise exit from the Coupe de la Ligue at the hands of Auxerre on Tuesday.

Girard made a number of alterations to the Les Dogues side, who were eliminated from the competition following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Ligue 2 outfit after extra time at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

"I do not regret having changed the team around," Girard said in a press conference. "It is important that the boys on the bench show us what they can do. But we must not condemn any of the boys who lost.

"I knew I was taking a risk, but I thought we had a sufficient advantage anyway. It didn't quite pay off. We should not be too negative.

"We managed to create chances, but some of the boys can and should do much better to come knocking at the door and claim a starting spot."

Third-placed Lille host second-placed AS Monaco in Ligue 1 on Sunday night.
