Cesar Prandelli stands by decision to resign

Cesar Prandelli stands by his decision to leave his position as manager of Italy, saying that his resignation is "irrevocable".

Cesar Prandelli has stood by his decision to step down as manager of Italy, saying that his resignation is "irrevocable".

The 56-year-old, who took up the position in 2010, announced his decision to resign following the Azzurri's group-stage exit from the World Cup.

President of the Italian FA, Giancarlo Abete, later said that he hoped Prandelli would rethink the decision, but the former Roma coach will stand by his choice.

"I talked to the president of the Federation and Demetrio Albertini, and gave my resignation. The technical setup didn't work, and I take all responsibility for that.

"Something has changed since my contract was renewed. I don't know why. I chose a certain technical plan and that's why I am resigning, because it did not work. My resignation is irrevocable."

Prandelli led Italy to the final of Euro 2012.
