Portsmouth rise off the bottom of the Championship table with a 2-0 win over Hull City at Fratton Park.

Portsmouth have risen off the bottom of the Championship table and kept their survival hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Hull City at Fratton Park.

Both goals came in the opening 25 for Michael Appleton's side, who were well-deserving of the comfortable scoreline.

Chris Maguire broke the deadlock in the 20th minute after a hopeful long ball down the right channel had created confusion among the Tigers' defence.

Vito Mannone came off his line to gather but he was comprehensively beaten to the ball by Maguire, who stylishly lobbed the Italian keeper.

The lead was doubled four minutes later as George Thorne got to the byline and sent in a low cross to give Joel Ward the simplest of finishes.

The visitors offered very little going forward and Jay Simpson's late shot that sailed hopelessly wide was Nick Barmby's side's only effort in anger.

Hull are now without in win in their last four matches.
