German police arrest 21 Galatasaray fans after crowd trouble

German police arrest 21 Galatasaray fans in the wake of the crowd trouble which marred their 4-1 Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

German police have arrested 21 Galatasaray supporters following crowd trouble during their Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

Flares were thrown onto the pitch by a section of away fans which caused the match, which Dortmund went on to win 4-1, to be temporarily halted.

Police in Dortmund detained and checked the identities of 700 Galatasaray fans before making 21 arrests and opening an attempted manslaughter case, claiming that "lives were at risk".

"The police have made it very clear that we will show consistent law enforcement," said police chief Gregor Lange at a press conference.

"We have to question whether the police were showed due respect in a very difficult situation. Lives were at risk."

The Turkish outfit were fined £40,000 by UEFA for the throwing of flares during their Group D fixture with Arsenal earlier this season.
