Xherdan Shaqiri became just the 22nd player to reach five European Championship goals with his stunning strike to earn Switzerland a point against Scotland in Euro 2024 Group A this evening.
The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich man pounced on a loose pass to fire an inch-perfect first-time curling strike beyond the keeper, levelling things up after Scott McTominay's deflected strike had given Scotland the lead.
The goal earned Switzerland a draw that leaves them on four points after two games and in a very strong position to qualify for the last 16, while for Shaqiri there were a couple of slices of history as he wrote himself further into Swiss football folklore.
The diminutive forward is now the only player to have scored in each of the last three World Cups and each of the last three Euros, netting in six consecutive major tournaments stretching back to the 2014 World Cup.
Shaqiri had already broken a national record by simply starting the game, becoming the first Swiss player to feature at seven different major international tournaments, and he now has 10 goals across those tournaments.
With those goals being split evenly between the World Cup and Euros, he joins an elite group of only seven players to have scored at least five goals in both competitions - adding his name alongside Michel Platini, Jurgen Klinsmann, Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku.
Shaqiri has also now scored the same number of European Championship goals as Marco van Basten, Robert Lewandowski and Zinedine Zidane, with the opportunity to climb even further up that list throughout the remainder of Euro 2024.
