Sylvain Distin retires from international football with no caps

Sylvain Distin tweets to announce his intention to retire from international duty, despite never having been capped by France.

Veteran centre-back Sylvain Distin has announced his retirement from international football after once again being overlooked by France.

The 36-year-old Frenchman has had an impressive season with Everton, helping the Merseysiders reach a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and guaranteeing European football for the Toffees.

Despite this, there was no place for him in Didier Deschamps's World Cup squad.

Distin, who has never been capped by France, wrote on Twitter: "I'm retiring from France team. It was a wonderful experience, and after a record of #0 cap it's time to say goodbye and focus on my club."

Distin did receive an international call-up from Guadeloupe in 2011, but turned down the chance to represent the country in which his father was born.
