England boss Gareth Southgate says that his Three Lions squad are "hungry and want to have a go" at the 2018 World Cup.

England boss Gareth Southgate has said that his Three Lions squad are "hungry and want to have a go" at the 2018 World Cup.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Nick Pope were among the surprise names in Southgate's 23-man squad for this summer's tournament, which was revealed on Wednesday afternoon.

Southgate has accepted that a lack of experience could count against the Three Lions, but the 47-year-old is tipping his team to make an impression.

"I don't think when you're involved with England you can ever write any tournament off. That wouldn't be acceptable. We know that teams who win them tend to be more experienced. That's what Germany and Spain have done over the years," Southgate told reporters.

"With this group we don't really know. We have faith in them and know they lack big-match experience but can be very exciting now and even more in the future. But I don't want to limit them: they're young and hungry and want to have a go. We will embrace the tournament."

England will face Tunisia, Panama and Belgium in the group stage of the World Cup.
