Roy Hodgson: 'Wayne Rooney will break England caps record'

Wayne Rooney is 'certain' to break Peter Shilton's England caps record, says Roy Hodgson.

England manager Roy Hodgson has backed Wayne Rooney to break Peter Shilton's record of 125 international caps.

The 29-year-old, who is the current England and Manchester United captain, is set to make his 100th appearance for his country against Slovenia at Wembley on Saturday.

"Wayne is only just 29, and should certainly beat Peter's record," Hodgson told The Mirror.

"Though I don't believe he goes to bed at night dreaming of that or Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record."

Rooney made his England debut in 2003, and has scored 43 goals in his 99 international appearances.
