David Bernstein: 'Michael Owen should remain in football'

Football Association chairman David Bernstein insists that Michael Owen, who will retire at the end of the season, should continue in football.

Football Association chairman David Bernstein believes that Michael Owen should continue in football when he hangs up his boots at the end of the season.

Owen, 33, revealed on Tuesday that he will retire in the summer after struggling with a variety of injuries in recent years.

"It is a great shame that Michael has decided to call time on his career, but he can look back with great pride and satisfaction of having contributed so much to the game, both at international level and domestically," Bernstein told the FA's official website.

"He has scored some great and memorable goals for both club and country, and will be missed by the many fans that have enjoyed and shared in those great moments. We hope Michael's experience is not lost to football."

Owen, who currently represents Stoke City, made 89 appearances for England, scoring 40 goals in the process.
