UEFA "regrets skirmishes" ahead of England clash

UEFA releases a statement saying that it "regrets the skirmishes" that took place in Lille on Wednesday evening.

UEFA has praised the work of French police after they made 36 arrests during a number of incidents that took place in Lille on Wednesday evening.

After England supporters were attacked by Russian ultras on Saturday, tension intensified after the conclusion of Russia's defeat to Slovakia with England and Wales fans already present in the town ahead of Thursday's contest between the two teams in nearby Lens.

Several confrontations were reported and shown on social media, with the majority of those supporters detained said to be Russian or English, and UEFA has been quick to respond to the events of last night.

A statement read: "UEFA regrets the skirmishes which occurred in Lille last night.

"Police forces made several arrests and were quick to restore order and keep the situation under control."

Earlier this week, UEFA threatened both Russia and England with expulsion if trouble continued to occur at the tournament, with Russia being handed a suspended disqualification as a result of the crowd trouble in Marseille on Saturday night.
