Peterborough United won the Football League Trophy for the first time in their history this afternoon, beating Chesterfield 3-1 at Wembley.
Posh took the lead after just six minutes when Josh McQuoid poked the ball home from close range, while it was 2-0 before half time when Shaun Brisley rose to power a header into the top corner.
Chesterfield pulled a goal back after the restart courtesy of an Eoin Doyle strike, while their chances seemed to improve when Joe Newell was dismissed for a kick out at Sam Morsy.
However, Peterborough wrapped up the victory with less than 15 minutes left as Britt Assombalonga scored from the spot after Liam Cooper had brought down Mark Little.

Good afternoon! Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for the Football League Trophy final between Chesterfield and Peterborough at Wembley. This competition never seems to disappoint in terms of drama and action, so we should have an entertaining spectacle on our hands today!
Let's start with a look at Chesterfield today, who are returning to Wembley in this showpiece event for the second time in just three years. The Spireites won this competition as recently as 2012, beating Swindon - who lost to Peterborough in the area finals this season - 2-0 on that occasions. They will be looking to make it a quickfire double this afternoon.
Despite their recent history in the competition, Chesterfield come into the match as slight underdogs given their position in the league ladder compared to Peterborough. Paul Cook's side are currently third in League Two and looking good for automatic promotion to the third tier this season with a five-point gap separating them from their nearest challengers.
Indeed, Chesterfield still harbour realistic ambitions of winning the League Two title this season, sitting just four points behind current leaders Rochdale. Paul Cook's side have the luxury of superior goal difference compared to the two teams above them, although only two goals separate the three teams currently in the automatic promotion spots.
The Football League Trophy has been something of a distraction for Chesterfield, despite Paul Cook's insistence that it is a good one to have. Since qualifying for this final, they have only managed three wins in their nine matches, drawing three and losing the remaining three. However, it was in the immediate aftermath of their aggregate win to Fleetwood, despite their 1-0 loss in the second leg, that they struggled most - they have only lost one of their most recent five matches.
Such a regular stream of dropped points has hurt them in terms of league position, with Rochdale losing just once in their last 12 to take top spot and Scunthorpe unbeaten in 24 league games to take second. Paul Cook will be hoping that a victory this afternoon will spur his side on to make a strong end to the season and potentially claw back the lost points on the two sides above them.
They certainly have the stats to back up their league position having scored 62 goals in their 40 matches so far this season. Only leaders Rochdale have managed more in the current campaign, and even then there is only two goals in it.
At the other end of the field they have also excelled. No team in League Two has a better defensive record than the Spireites this season having conceded an average of less than a goal a game. Chesterfield's defence has been breached just 32 times in their 40 matches this season, including just once in their last four matches.
Of course, all those statistics go out the window in this competition, with a step up in quality required to compete with League One opposition. It is something that Chesterfield have been called upon to do once already this season in the Football League Trophy, edging to a surprise win against Oldham Athletic on penalties to reach the area final back in December.
Other than that, it has been League Two opposition for the Spireites, but they have still pulled off some impressive results. Mansfield Town were the first to fall, losing 1-0, while current league leaders Rochdale were comfortably beaten 3-0. Then came that match against Oldham before a 3-1 away victory in the first leg of their area final against Fleetwood put them in control of the tie. A 1-0 loss at home in the second leg was something of a shock, but they still managed to book their place in the Wembley final with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Reaching the final certainly has had an impact on Chesterfield's form, though. As mentioned earlier, they have won just three of nine matches since booking their Wembley tickets, and that came off the back of a run of just one defeat in 13. Away from home things are also worrying, with just one win in their last seven on the road since the first leg victory over Fleetwood.
They do have experience in this competition on their side, however. In addition to winning it in 2012, they have only lost twice in normal or extra time since 2009, and one of those defeats was their last outing against Fleetwood that ultimately proved to be irrelevant. They have Wembley experience in their ranks too, with Ian Evatt gearing up for his fourth appearance at the home of English football, while Lee and Roberts have both played here before as well.
Peterborough also have Wembley experience in terms of players, but as a club they have not played at the famous stadium for 14 years. Indeed, should they win this trophy today it would be the most prestigious piece of silverware that the club has ever won, so there is a slice of history on offer for the Posh players this afternoon.
They come into this match currently occupying the highest position they can realistically hope to achieve this season - sixth in League One. They do have two games in hand over fifth, but a whopping 17 points separate them from the top five so it is a straight shootout for the final playoff place this season now.
It is a tight race for that final spot too, with Swindon Town, Walsall and Milton Keynes Dons all hot on the heels of Darren Ferguson's side. They are just one point above Swindon, although the two games in hand over the three teams directly below them could prove to be pivotal in the race for the playoffs.
Of course, they need to ensure that those games in hand are made to count, which would require an improvement from their recent form. Like Chesterfield, their league form has suffered since they booked their Wembley spot, with just three wins and five defeats from their eight matches. Such a record has certainly killed off any chances of a top five finish, and they will need to turn things around if they are to avoid slipping out of the playoffs as well.
Peterborough's strength this season has certainly been their form in front of goal, with 59 goals in their 38 matches so far. Only the league's top four teams have scored more in the current campaign, which is a fine record for a team with one or two games in hand over the majority of teams around them in the table.
However, at the other end things are quite as impressive. League One is a high scoring division and Posh have certainly found that as they struggle to keep clean sheets, conceding 52 goals in their 38 matches. That is comfortably the worst record in the playoff position, while only two teams in the top 10 and three in the top half of the table have conceded more.
While Chesterfield have somewhat steadied the ship in terms of form before today's match, Peterborough go into it still struggling. They have lost their last two games - to the two teams directly above them in the table - and been beaten in three of their last four.
They are capable of the odd remarkable result, however, as shown earlier in the season when they were drawn against Reading in the League Cup. Not many people gave them much of a chance against a side who are now pushing for the playoffs and a return to the top flight, but Peterborough dismantled the Royals 6-0 in one of the most memorable results in their recent history. A repeat performance would certainly be welcomed this afternoon!
Posh have had to overcome both League One and League Two opposition on their journey to Wembley, so they have a proven record of beating the teams below them in the league ladder. Their campaign began with a 2-1 win over Brentford before edging past Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0 in the next round. Newport County were then swept aside 3-0 before an even area final against Swindon which was eventually settle on penalties following a 3-3 aggregate draw.
TEAM NEWS: The team news is in for both sides, and from Chesterfield's point of view both Talbot and Bennett, who have recently been struggling with injuries, are only deemed fit enough for the bench. Experienced campaign Ian Evatt captains the side, while Tommy Lee - a survivor from their 2012 success - starts in goal as expected. Peterborough, meanwhile, have been forced into a number of changes to their side but can name captain Tommy Rowe in the starting XI despite injury concerns. The inclusion of Rowe is a big plus for Peterborough, but they are still weakened by the absences of Ajose, Washington, Baldwin, and Nugent, all of whom are cup tied and ineligible for the match. That levels the playing field somewhat against a full-strength Chesterfield team.
PREDICTION: We're 10 minutes from kickoff at Wembley, which means that it is time for my match prediction! This one is a tough one to call as Chesterfield are in the league below but have a fine record in this competition. A lot could depend on how the players react to their big day out at Wembley, with Chesterfield having the more experience at the stadium. However, I think Peterborough will have just about enough to edge this one. I'm going to go for a 2-1 win to the Posh!
While Peterborough have never won this competition, their man in the dugout has. Indeed, Darren Ferguson scored the second goal in Wrexham's 2-0 win over Southend United in the 2005 final at the Millenium Stadium, clinching the victory for his side. Could he add the trophy to his honours list as a manager as well?
Across from Ferguson in the dugout is Paul Cook, and the duo will be familiar with each other having both been on the books at Wolverhampton Wanderers as players. They spent the final four months of the 1993-94 season together at the Molineux, but this is the first time that the former teammates will have met as managers.
Whatever happens this afternoon, both sides will enjoy playing at Wembley - a rare treat for teams so far down the Football League ladder. Chesterfield may have made the trip twice in the space of three years, but that won't make it any less special for the Spireites. Even the best players in world football relish playing at Wembley, and it is an experience that won't be lost on either set of players. Of course, some players may rise to the occasion while other may wither, but either way it will be a special day in the careers of everyone involved today.
This competition may not be the most prestigious around, but what it lacks in glamour it more than makes up for in drama. It is very rare that you get a dull encounter in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, and I am certainly not expecting one this afternoon. Both managers will be telling his players to get out there, enjoy themselves and make the most of the occasion.

PENALTY SHOUT! An early penalty shout for Chesterfield as the ball is played in to Doyle just inside the area, and he holds the ball up before Brisley came through the back of him, tripping him. Andy D'Urso waves away the claims, but I have certainly seen those given. An early escape for Peterborough.
Great defending from Cooper and Evatt! A defensive mix-up allows Peterborough to come forward, but the pull back to Newell is well blocked by the defensive duo.
GOAL! Chesterfield 0-1 Peterborough (Josh McQuoid)
Peterborough have an early lead! It is poor defending from the corner as Posh are allowed a free header in the middle. It is straight at Lee, but he can only parry it back into a dangerous area, where McQuoid is waiting to tuck home his first goal for the club from close range. What a start for Ferguson's men!
Tommy Lee will be very disappointed by that piece of goalkeeping. There wasn't much pace on the initial header as he spilt it and he should have done a lot better with it. What a time and place for McQuoid to get his first goal for the club, though.
Chesterfield will be feeling hard done by having gone behind, however, as they had a legitimate penalty appeal turned down shortly before the goal. Andy D'Urso was in a very good position as Doyle was brought down, but he waved it away. Having seen the replay a few times, it must be said that it looks like a penalty to me.
CHESTERFIELD SUB: More bad news for Chesterfield, and it is devastating for Ollie Banks and he makes way to be replaced by Sam Hird. He was a carpet fitter mere months ago and now finds his Wembley dream ended after little more than 10 minutes. To add insult to injury, he is limping off after kicking his own player.
That goal has really settled Peterborough into this match. Chesterfield appeared to have made the better start before falling behind, but now it is Posh who are on top. Nothing has gone right from the Spireites so far.
CHANCE! Good chance for Peterborough to double their lead as Swanson pokes the ball through to Assombalonga, who shows great pace to beat his man and get to the ball before the keeper. He moves it away from the keeper before going down under the challenge of the defender and the keeper, but the referee waves away claims of a penalty. Anywhere else on the pitch, that would've been a foul.
Better from Chesterfield as they threaten with a deep cross from the left flank, but the ball eventually deflects out for a corner, which is comfortably dealt with.
The League Two side come forward again as the ball is played in from the right flank to Doyle, who is in plenty of space inside the box. He looks up and tries to drill a low shot towards goal, but it is blocked and goes out for another corner.
This is a lot better from Chesterfield now. Peterborough enjoyed a period of dominance immediately after their goal, but the League Two side have now settled and are seeing a lot more of the ball. A goal of their own would really change things here.
CHANCE! Great play from Rowe as he drives into the box before beating one defender far too easy. He then clips a short pass in towards Newell at the front post, but Lee is there to smother well at the near post. Brace goalkeeping.
Chesterfield come forward at the other end as Doyle makes progress on the right flank. He pulls the ball back into the area but it is just behind the blues shirts in the box and runs all the way through away from danger. That was actually a decent cross, but there was no-one there to take advantage.
Doyle looks to have a shooting opportunity inside the box but the door is quickly slammed shut by some tight defending. Chesterfield are on top right now, however.
Darren Ferguson will be imploring his side to regain control of this match as they have let it slip in the last 10 minutes or so. A second goal could really kill Chesterfield's spirit, and attack may very well be the best form of defence at this stage in the match.
PENALTY CLAIM! Roberts advances into the box, throws a couple of stepovers and then throws himself to the floor. The referee once again says no to the penalty shouts, and this time he is spot on. Roberts stuck his own leg out to try to catch the defender, but the referee would not be fooled. The only criticism of the ref there is that he should have booked Roberts.
The territory statistics show that 39% of the game has been played in Peterborough's third in the last 10 minutes, and that reflects Chesterfield's improvement over that time. Paul Cook will be desperate for his side to take advantage of this good spell with a goal.
McQuoid does well to stay on his feet after getting a hammer of a volley right in his face from Roberts. It came at him from no more than a couple of yards away as well, so he did very well to stay up!
CHANCE! What a huge chance this is for the equaliser! Darikwa does brilliantly on the right flank to skip past his man and clip the ball back to Morsy inside the box. The midfielder waits for it and looks for all the world as if he will have a simple finish, but he completely slices his effort and sends it hopelessly wide. Dreadful finish, he simply had to score there.
The match halts for a while as a Peterborough player receives treatment, giving both sides a chance to refresh and rehydrate. It is a warm day in London and, coupled with the big pitch at Wembley, that could sap the energy of these players as the match wears on.
The big screen has just shown Sir Alex Ferguson in attendance, supporting his son. His image draws a cascade of boos from the crowd, but he is something of a jinx for Darren Ferguson so it wouldn't be surprising if the majority of the jeers were coming from Peterborough fans!
CHANCE! Another huge chance for Chesterfield as Roberts curls a fine free kick towards the back post, where Evatt has peeled off. The skipper is unmarked and has a clear header at goal, but he plants it straight into the arms of the keeper. That was a glorious opportunity.
GOAL! Chesterfield 0-2 Peterborough (Shaun Brisley)
Peterborough have doubled their lead against the run of play! It again comes from a corner as Brisley attacks the ball really well, beating three blue shirts in the air and sending a superb header into the top corner. Can Chesterfield come back from this?
McQuoid scored his first goal for the club earlier and that is Brisley first as well. Another first would happen if Chesterfield come back into this match and win it - no team has ever recovered from a two-goal deficit to win this final before.
It must be said that Chesterfield don't deserve to be two down. They have been the better team in this first half and will be happy with their performance despite the obvious disappointment of the scoreline. Two set pieces have undone them so far, and Peterborough have another one in a good crossing position here...
This time they do deal with it as Hird nods the ball over his own bar, but it is only a temporary reprieve as Peterborough now have a corner.
For once, the delivery from Swanson is poor and Chesterfield easily clear the danger. They launch a counter-attack, but that quickly fizzles out as Posh win the ball back.
There will be a minimum of three minutes added time at the end of this first half. Can Chesterfield pull a goal back before the break?
Superb challenge from Evatt as he slides in to dispossess McQuoid as the goalscorer looked like breaking free. Evatt is strapped up with the sort of headband forever associated with Terry Butcher having cut his eye earlier in the game. Indeed, he was receiving stitches to the wound when McQuoid scored his goal.
Superb delivery again from Roberts as he whips the ball towards the front post, and Doyle is very close to connecting with it after a good piece of movement. The ball just bounces too high for him to knock it towards goal, however, and the keeper collects.
HALF TIME: Chesterfield 0-2 Peterborough United
So far, so good for Peterborough as they look to be well on course to win the Football League Trophy. They lead Chesterfield 2-0 at the halfway stage, although that only tells half of the story as the League Two side have performed very well and are unlucky to be behind. No side has ever come from two goals down to win this final, so Chesterfield will need to create history to change this now.
The goals both came from corners, with the first coming after just six minutes. Brisley's header was straight at keeper Tommy Lee, who fumbled into the path of McQuoid. The striker then took a touch before poking home from close range to give his side the lead. Brisley was the scourge of Peterborough again later in the half as he attacked the ball really well to double his side's lead with a thumping header.
Ignoring the scoreline for a moment, Chesterfield will be really happy with their performance so far. They have been the better team and Paul Cook will be wondering just how his side are two goals behind at the halfway stage having created two glorious chances of their own. The first fell to Morsy after good work down the right from Darikwa, but the midfielder made a mess of his effort when he simply had to score.
The second chance came just one minute before Peterborough's second goal as Roberts delivered a fine cross to the back post, when Ian Evatt had lost his marker and was in plenty of space. He directed a solid header towards the near post, but it was straight into the arms of the keeper who made a comfortable save.
It could have been so different for Chesterfield had they been awarded a penalty early on. Brisley appeared to have come through the back of Doyle inside the box after just four minutes, but Andy D'Urso waved the claims away. Replays have shown that it should have been given, although the two sides are perhaps level on that front as Assombalonga saw his own penalty shout turned down.
KICKOFF: Chesterfield get us back underway for the second half as they look to create history and come from two goals down to win this trophy. Can they do it or will Peterborough hold on?
Bright start from Chesterfield to this second half as they press Peterborough high up the pitch, winning the ball in a good area. Eventually they gain a corner, but it is too high and two Chesterfield players duck at the back post, with the ball coming off the back of Ian Evatt's head and out for a corner. Not quite sure what they were trying there!
CHANCE! Good chance for Peterborough to kill this game off as the ball comes in to Assombalonga, but the striker mis-hits his shot and the chance goes begging. There was some desperate defending from the League Two side there, but they survived.
Ambitious from McQuaid as he takes the ball down on his chest before attempting a half volley from at least 35 yards out. He probably has visions of a Rooney-esque strike, but instead slices his effort nearing to the corner flag.
SHOT! Nice play from Swanson as he races down the right before squaring up his man, jinking one way and then the other to create space to shoot. He curls the ball towards the top corner with his left, but his effort goes a couple of yards over the bar.
GOAL! Chesterfield 1-2 Peterborough (Eoin Doyle)
Chesterfield have a goal back! What a big moment that could be in this match as Morsy carries the ball forward from midfield and into the area before squeezing a pass across to Doyle. The striker is clinical with his finish, volleying it low into the bottom corner and giving the keeper no chance. Good finish, but Morsy also deserves plenty of praise for his part in that one.
Can the Spireites do this? They were on top in the first half and should have gone into the break at least level, so they have certainly shown that they can create chances. All they need is one more here and they could be on course for a historic comeback win.
Doyle is very close to another chance that could have brought the equaliser. The ball was clipped over the top for the striker, who had peeled off the last shoulder and lost the defenders. He is inches away from connecting with a header, but he can't stretch enough and the keeper gathers.
From Peterborough's point of view, they need to regain control of this match. They have only been on top for a short period after taking the lead, since when Chesterfield have had the better moments. The League One side need to exert their authority.
We have half an hour left of this match, and what a final 30 minutes it promises to be. We are very nicely poised for a brilliant finish to the match, and it could still go either way.
Andy D'Urso has been very lenient so far this afternoon, too lenient on occasions. He has turned down a number of fouls in good positions, including a couple of very legitimate penalty claims. The latest comes on the edge of the box for Peterborough.
Roberts has played a number of fine deliveries into the box today and the latest is a teasing cross into the six-yard box that Olejnik punches clear.
YELLOW CARD! The first yellow card of the afternoon goes to Humphreys for a challenge around 30 yards from goal.
SAVE! Peterborough come close from the resulting free kick as McCann fires a curling low effort towards the bottom corner. It is a fine effort from such a distance, but Lee is down well to make the save, holding on as the ball threatening to squirm free.
Nice play from Morsy as he advances from midfield once again, causing the Peterborough defence problems. He tries to play a one-two on the edge of the box but goes down before he can get the return pass, only for D'Urso to once again allow play to continue.
PETERBOROUGH SUB: Posh make their first change of the afternoon as Jack Payne replaces McCann in midfield.
RED CARD! Joe Newell (Peterborough United)
My word, what a stupid piece of play from Newell. With his team second best and hanging on to their lead, the midfielder goes and gets himself sent off with a ridiculous kick out. Morsy bundled him over with a challenge that was not too heavy or malicious, yet still prompted Newell to kick him in retaliation. Lunacy from the Peterborough man.
YELLOW CARD! Roberts picks up a yellow card for a cynical foul as Peterborough threatened to break away. D'Urso could have perhaps played the advantage there, but instead he pulled play back for the card.
The replay of the red card incident has shown that Morsy did in fact appear to stand on Newell in the build-up to his kick, but it looks like an accidental stamp. Whatever happened, there is no excuse for Newell's reaction.
PETERBOROUGH SUB: Peterborough make another change as Craig Alcock replaces goalscorer Shaun Brisley. The departing man has a tight hamstring, we're hearing.
CHESTERFIELD SUB: Chesterfield also make a change as O'Shea makes way for Mason Bennett.
Chesterfield pepper the Peterborough box with a series of crosses that are just about dealt with. The ball eventually falls to Darikwa on the edge of the area, and he fires a wayward volley well off target.

Peterborough regain their two-goal lead! Little does really well on the right flank, bursting into the box before knocking it past Cooper, who takes the full-back's legs from underneath him. The referee duly points to the spot and Assombalonga rolls it straight down the middle to make it 3-1. Is there any way back for Chesterfield now?
CHESTERFIELD SUB: The Spireites make their third and final change as Sam Hird, who earlier came on as a sub himself, is hauled off in favour of Marc Richards.
Chesterfield now have nine minutes to get two goals, which is a tough ask even considering how well they have played today. Coopers also received a yellow card for the challenge inside the box that led to the penalty and, despite Chesterfield's complaints, it looked like a certain spot kick to me.
PETERBOROUGH SUB: McQuoid gave his side a perfect start to the match with a goal after six minutes, but he won't finish the game as he makes way to be replaced by Lloyd Isgrove.
Isgrove is immediately involved as he cuts inside from the left flank before giving it to Swanson. The midfielder has Assombalonga in support but chooses to go for goal himself, hammering a shot well over the bar.
Another free kick is whipped in towards the back post for Evatt to attack, but this time it is just too high for him and he can only nod it harmlessly over the top.
Time is really running out for Chesterfield now as Peterborough just sit back on their lead. It would take a remarkable sequence of events for the Spireites to pull this one back now. Darren Ferguson is nearing his first trophy as a manager, with his dad Sir Alex in the stands. No stranger to trophies himself, of course.
Half a chance for Doyle as Ryan whips the ball into the front post for the striker to attempt to turn goalwards. However, he couldn't wrap his foot around it and the ball goes out for a goal kick.
YELLOW CARDS! Cooper goes into the book for a cynical challenge, and for a moment people in the stadium think that it is his second yellow. However, it was Darikwa who was cautioned in the immediate aftermath of the penalty, not Cooper. Moments later, Roberts also goes into the book.
There will be five minutes of added time at the end of this match. Plenty of injury time, but surely not enough for Chesterfield.
SAVE! That could have made things interesting! Mason Bennett lines up a shot from around 25 yards out and it takes a big deflection on the way through that almost guides it into the bottom corner. However, it took just enough pace off the ball to allow Olejnik to readjust and make the save.
OFF THE LINE! Chesterfield almost pull a goal back again as another Roberts delivery is just about cleared to the edge of the box. Morsy is waiting there, but his low and hard strike is cleared off the line, where two white shirts were waiting.
SAVE! At the other end Isgrove looks to seal the win in style, bursting into the box and past a couple of defenders before drawing a good stop from Lee at his near post with a stinging drive.

There we have it! Peterborough edge an eventful match, but the 3-1 scoreline only tells half of the story. League Two side Chesterfield will feel really hard done by having lost a match in which they were the better team, but Peterborough were simply more clinical. Posh also had a man sent off, Newell being shown a red card for a stupid kick at Morsy. However, an Assombalonga penalty sealed the points after first-half goals from McQuoid and Brisley.
