Pundit Gary Neville admits that he was taken by surprise when Liverpool shelved their interest in signing RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, who could now join Chelsea.

Gary Neville has claimed that Liverpool have missed out on 'making a statement' by withdrawing their interest in RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner.

Despite months of speculation linking the Germany international with a switch to Anfield, it now appears that the 24-year-old will complete a move to Chelsea.

Although the Merseyside giants are on the brink of winning the Premier League title, Neville feels that Jurgen Klopp has squandered the chance to gain an extra edge over the club's rivals.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: "His signing would have sent out an incredible statement. He is a great striker, a young one that fits the profile of a Jurgen Klopp team. It would have told everybody else where they are at.

"But we understand the financial difficulties everybody is in. Maybe Chelsea had a better deal on the table. Or maybe Liverpool didn't want to go to the levels they had previously agreed to."

Werner, who has a release clause in the region of £54m, has contributed 31 goals in all competitions this season.
