A report claims that Chelsea are to appoint legendary midfielder Frank Lampard as Maurizio Sarri's successor and Didier Drogba will join his backroom staff.

Frank Lampard is reportedly on course to be appointed as Chelsea's new manager and intends to add Didier Drogba to his backroom staff.

The iconic midfielder, who made just short of 700 appearances for the club in his playing days, has been lined up to replace Juventus-bound Maurizio Sarri.

According to The Sun, talks continued throughout Friday and Lampard now appears certain to return to Stamford Bridge in a non-playing capacity, with Derby County due around £4m in compensation.

The report indicates that Lampard will use Drogba as his striker coach and Shay Given may also make the move from Derby as goalkeeper coach.

Trusted lieutenant Jody Morris is expected to be appointed Chelsea's assistant manager, meanwhile, but there will be no place for John Terry as he is happy in his role with promoted Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, the report indicates that Sarri's number two Gianfranco Zola is unsure about his future as he is not willing to accept a demotion.
